To maximize the benefits of a\u00a0chemical peel<\/a>\u00a0and help your skin recover,\u00a0it’s\u00a0crucial to look after your face during the healing process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To show your skin some love, follow these dos and don’ts for chemical peel aftercare.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do: Use sunscreen generously and be mindful of the sun<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Remember, avoid the sun and don’t be afraid to use sunscreen after chemical peels. After a peel, your face is at its most sensitive because layers of skin have actually been removed. Additionally, the newly exposed skin following a peel will be especially susceptible to damaging UV radiation. Therefore, it requires greater attention than ever before. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ to protect your skin from harmful UV rays when you can’t stay in the shaded areas when you’re out and about. After a chemical peel, your skin will undoubtedly feel sensitive, but soap-free face cleansers are mild and don’t dry it out too much. Since the skin has already been stripped of its natural oils following a peel, foaming cleansers frequently cause the skin to feel tight and dry. After a chemical peel, use a mild cleansing balm, cream, or oil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do: Moisturize as much as possible<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Use a moisturizer to replenish and maintain the moisture content of dry skin. Your skin is already sensitive, so your moisturizer should be free of harsh chemicals and irritants (such as acids and acne treatments). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, they have to be water-based because moisturizers with a lot of water are pleasant and light for the skin. Keep in mind that because softer skin doesn’t peel off as quickly, moisturizing will prolong the peeling process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do: Use cool water to clean your face<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After a chemical peel, your skin may feel a little sensitive, and hot water may cause discomfort and inflammation on your newly exposed skin. For a mild, calming option for your healing skin, wash your face with lukewarm water. However, remember, instead of rubbing your face, gently pat it dry.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do: Make room for your skin<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The healing process is the main focus of good chemical peel aftercare. Wait at least one to two weeks before rushing into another skincare treatment to give your skin time to heal itself. As always, though, heed the advice of your dermatologist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t: Exfoliate <\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s probably nothing you’ll want to do more than reach for the closest exfoliator and rub your skin till it’s dry and flaky. However, put down the face cleanse. Put it away if you must. Your skin has likely just undergone the most intense exfoliation it has ever experienced; it doesn’t require any more. To give your skin a respite, wait at least three days following a mild chemical peel before exfoliating. The wait time for medium peels might be weeks.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t: Peel or pick<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Avoid picking or peeling any loose skin, just as you should stop using your face scrub. However, disrupting the skin’s normal shedding process can result in scarring and bleeding, which is unquestionably worse than any transient flaking. Some peels cause the skin to peel in rather thick layers; if this is the case, use clean nail scissors to carefully and gently cut the peeling skin away from the skin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t: Avoid perspiring<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This means no sunbathing, no intense exercise, and no spa days with a sauna. Keep cool until your skin starts to show signs of recuperation because sweat might aggravate it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t: Use retinol<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although retinols are excellent skincare products for promoting cell turnover and new cell growth, your skin is already addressing this after a chemical peel. Wait until your skin has healed before starting retinols again to avoid causing cell turnover overload. A week or so prior to your peel, you should also cease utilizing your retinol products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
