Whitening Injections: Simple Rules to Follow Before, During and After Treatment

Usually, whitening injections are chosen by people to improve their complexion, dullness, or dark spots as part of a more extensive skin-brightening routine. But how you treat your skin around treatment will affect how your skin reacts and how well you are able to maintain your results. Practicing a few basic guidelines before, during and after each session will help you make the procedure more organized and avoid behaviors that might cause problems with your skincare routine.

So, forget about complex restrictions, and concentrate on some simple steps like preparing your skin in the right way, talking freely to your dermatologist, following the suggested treatment schedule, and taking care of your skin between sessions.

Here are simple rules you can follow before, during and after the treatment.

Before the Treatment

Provide Necessary Details to Your Dermatologist

You must give your dermatologist a full picture of your overall health before whitening injections. This includes prescription medicines, over the counter medicines, vitamins, dietary supplements, and other injectable/aesthetic treatments.

This information will help your doctor decide if the treatment is right for you and if any part of your current regimen needs to be adjusted. Have you ever had any reactions to injections or esthetic procedures?

Don’t omit information because you don’t think it has anything to do with your skin. A good consultation enables your dermatologist to make decisions based on your unique circumstances and not to apply the same plan to all.

Arrive With Clean Skin

On your appointment day, avoid applying any makeup and keep the area clean.  Heavy makeup, thick creams or several products can make it more challenging to assess and prepare the area. The treatment area is usually cleaned by your practitioner prior to the injection, but reasonably clean skin makes the preparation easy. You also don’t want to start any new skin care products right before your appointment, especially if they have caused irritation or sensitivity in the past. The goal is to start the session with skin that is calm and not unnecessarily irritated.

Don’t Start a New Treatment Around the Same Time

Are you getting other treatments like chemical peels, laser treatments, skin boosters etc.? If yes, inform your dermatologist beforehand. Without a good plan it is hard to tell how your skin is reacting to the different treatments and you may get more irritation based on the procedures you opt for. Your dermatologist can help space treatments appropriately for your skin and the treatments being performed. This does not automatically mean that you need to stop all your other treatments. This means your procedures should be grouped for planning rather than scheduled individually.

During the Treatment

Ask What is Being Injected

You should be aware of which substance is being injected as part of your treatment. Inquire from your dermatologist about the ingredients, the intent of the formulation and how it fits into your overall strategy of treatment. This is especially important when clinics sell different formulations under similar labels. Knowing what you are getting allows you to make a more educated choice and gives your doctor an improved chance to detect anything that may not be suitable for you. A good professional will feel comfortable clarifying the treatment rather than requiring you to go ahead without understanding it.

After the Treatment

Keep Your Skincare Routine Simple

Don’t overload the skin with unnecessary products or treatments after your session. Follow a basic skincare regime as recommended by your dermatologist, especially if your skin is sensitive. Comfortable skin can be achieved by gentle cleaning, proper moisturization, and refraining from over-exfoliation. If your doctor advises you to refrain from using certain products, including active ingredients or certain beauty treatments, until they have finished, do not try new products. Remember, the products you use between treatments should complement your treatment and not continually attempt to work against it.

Avoid Sun Exposure

A whitening injection treatment plan will require thorough sun protection. Exposure to the sun frequently causes pigmentation and uneven skin tone, which can make achieving the desired appearance more difficult. Therefore, use a wide spectrum sunscreen and reapply as needed, especially if time outside is spent for long periods. In addition, avoiding unnecessary sun exposure can be accomplished through physical protection, like hats and shade.
