Dos and Don’ts of Hair Transplant You Must Know About

This guide outlines essential dos and don’ts of hair transplant to ensure smooth recovery and healing.  

Why is Aftercare Important? 

Remember, a successful hair transplant doesn’t finish when you leave the clinic. Just as important as the operation itself is post-procedure care. Taking time to heal after a hair transplant will help you feel more at ease. Surgically moving hair grafts from one area of your scalp to another is a major process that necessitates post-treatment medical attention and guidance. Following hair transplant aftercare guidelines is crucial since it may take up to a year for all of the hair grafts to fully settle and grow in thick and strong.  

Recovery Timeline  

Week 1: Recovery Starts 

Do: Don’t touch your scalp and get enough rest. 

Avoid: Wear tight caps or expose your head to direct sunlight. 

Antibiotics and a saline spray will be recommended to promote healing and prevent infection. 

Scabbing and mild edema are possible. 

Week 2: The Beginning of Shedding 

Do: As directed by DHI’s aftercare recommendations, keep washing your scalp gently.

Weeks 3–4: Advancements in Recovery

Don’t: Start working out at the gym or engaging in demanding activities again just yet.

Months 2-3: Inactive Stage 

Do: Exercise patience and continue to provide follow-up care consistently. 

Avoid using harsh products or chemical hair treatments.

Months 4–6: Notable Development 

Do: Use items recommended by your doctor to hydrate and nourish your scalp on a daily basis. 

Avoid comparing your development to that of others because everyone grows differently.

Months 6–12: Phase of Maturation 

Do: Keep shielding your scalp from the sun and inclement weather. 

Don’t: Miss your follow-up consultations with DHI experts.

Dos for Faster and Speedier Recovery  

Put Your Head in a Higher Position During Sleeping: After surgery, spend at least three to five nights sleeping on your back with your head up at a 45-degree angle. This lessens edema and shields the grafts from unintentional harm. 

  • Make Correct Use of the Recommended Shampoo: Use the special shampoo that was provided to gently wash your scalp about 48 hours after the transplant. Don’t use direct water pressure; instead, follow the washing process exactly as directed. 
  • Drink Plenty of Water: Every day, make sure you drink lots of water. Maintaining adequate hydration promotes blood circulation and aids in transplanted follicle recovery. 
  • Take Prescription Drugs as Directed: To avoid infection and reduce discomfort, take antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and painkillers as directed by your hair specialist. 
  • Apply Moisture to the Donor Area: To keep the donor region moisturized, use the suggested lotion or spray. Moisturizing relieves dryness, calms inflammation, and expedites the elimination of scabs. 
  • Eat a Diet Rich in Nutrients: Add foods that are high in protein, iron, biotin, and vitamin E. Drink plenty of water. Your immune system is strengthened, and tissue regeneration is accelerated with a balanced diet. 
  • Put on a Cap: After a few days, your doctor might suggest a loose, supple cap to protect your scalp from dust and other contaminants. Make sure that it stays away from implanted grafts.  

Don’ts That Prevent Smooth Recovery  

  • Don’t Sweat: Avoid any physical activity that makes you perspire for at least 10 to 14 days, such as running, saunas, and gym activities. Sweat raises the risk of infection and irritates grafts. 
  • Absence of alcohol and tobacco Use: After a transplant, abstain from smoking and alcohol for at least a week. While smoking slows down recovery by reducing the oxygen supply to the follicles, alcohol thins the blood and may interact with treatments. 
  • Steer Clear of Hair Products and Styling Tools: During the first month, avoid using straighteners, dryers, gels, or sprays. Until the transplanted area has completely healed, even combing should be avoided. 
  • Avoid Swimming: For at least three to four weeks, stay away from swimming in pools or the ocean since germs and chlorine can raise your risk of infection. 
  • Avoid the Sun: Exposure to the sun can harm the delicate scalp and prevent it from healing. For at least two weeks, stay inside during the hottest parts of the day or wear a loose-fitting cap. 
  • Avoid Picking at or Scratching Scabs: Scabbing and itching are natural healing processes. Picking or scratching, however, can loosen grafts and cause infection or scarring.
